Data Analysis Chapter of a Dissertation
One of the important sections in a dissertation is the data analysis chapter. This chapter consists all information related to the data and the analysis results generated from this data. In order to write good analysis chapter, the researcher should present the information in this chapter in a comprehensive and easy to understand manner. In addition, the researcher should take notice that the analysis should be in an appropriate format and detailed enough to support the researcher’s point of view.
We can divide the entire analysis chapter into into four sections:
-
Overview Section: In this section we brief about the purpose of the study, how the study was carried out, describe the data, give information about the research or data collection instrument, and state all the assumptions that were made during the study.
-
Objectives Section: In this section we give a detailed description about each of the research hypothesis that we will be testing using the data we collect.
-
Analysis Section: In this section we present the statistical, mathematical and qualitative analysis results that are generated from the actual data that is collected.
-
Conclusion Section: In this section we preset the insights that are drawn from the analysis results. In addition, we also explain each of the research hypothesis in context of the analysis results.
-
Discussion Section: In this section we provide a brief review of the chapter and the important findings. The findings are reported with reference to the past findings.
There are some guidelines that a research can follow while writing his analysis section:
-
A researcher should include a paragraph at the beginning of the chapter. This introductory paragraph explains the chapter.
-
It is a good practice to reference the results and findings with the literature review. This will relate the common findings of the research study and findings from the literature review.
-
The structure of the chapter should be similar to the one you follow during your literature review.
-
The results and findings should be critically examined and appropriate justification should be provided.
-
If the research finds something new, he should highlight it, and should provide an appropriate conclusion to the same.
-
The research should make sure that the analysis chapter is explained in an easy to understand language. It should not be too much technical.
This chapter is at the heart of your entire research study. The analysis chapter is the foundation of your research on which you will draw the conclusions, identify the patterns, and give recommendations. The validity and utility of your research depends a great deal on the health of this chapter. Thus, a researcher should give due attention while drafting this section.
